I'm currently in Berlin, having arrived last night. I'm staying with Jo, a friend of mine from school who's over here for a couple of months, and the past 12 hours have been pretty fun. I like Berlin. I like the way they do things. I like the way they say things (it's so funny).
I especially like their supermarkets. Jo and I went to the local supermarket last night, and it was quite an experience. I think you can tell a lot about a country by its supermarkets. In direct contrast to the supermarkets in the UK, the ones here have weird fluro lighting that makes you feel distinctly sick, with the goods in cardboard cartons on the shelf. They also have copious selections of meats, cheese, meats, wine, beer, meats, and lollies. They also understand recycling and trying to reduce consumer waste.
I think the point that I fell in love with them though was when we were what I took to be The Wine Aisle (with rows and rows of wine stacked floor to top), and Jo asked whether I'd prefer white or red. I said red. She said that they were in the next aisle. Ich liebe dich, Deustcheland!
And the beautiful part: only 2 euros for a decent bottle of wine!
Don't even get me started on the beer .... happy-jarv-sigh
