of reading and reading and occasionally trying things out,
and then stopping and going back to doing some more
reading. It's kind of good, but also kind of frustrating at
how much knowledge there is out there that I really really
really feel that I should know. And although the library
here is quite good and has quite a few of books that I
already have, there are a couple that it doesn't ...
nothing beats the comfort of knowing where information is
when you need it.
I was quite proud of my bookcases back home - I had a nice
selection, and the shelves I had for textbooks and the
other comp/neuro books was not bad for what was only then
an enthusiast's level. It was painful to have to go through
and choose which ones were the Chosen Ones who would be
making the migration north with me but it was nice to know
that I'd be seeing some of them soon. Well, maybe not
normal-soon, because we are dealing with the postal service
here after all - and their version of "soon" is like a real
estate agent's version of "cosy".
Anyway, when I posted my books 9 weeks ago (sigh), the lady
there did say that the normal time was anywhere up to 3
months. Well, that's ok I figured. And then she leant
forward and in a hushed whisper told me it would probably
be even longer than that. Double sigh.
For those of you that don't really know me, I had a
nightmare the other night and it was among the worst I´d
had for a while. I dreamt that the cargo ship that my books
were on had sunk to the bottom of the ocean and was lying
upside down, it's containers still airtight but my books
lost from me forever ... When I woke, I went online to
check whether there were any cargo ships that had been
reported as sunk. Hey, it happens sometimes. No-one
mentioned anything.
I do miss my books. The internet and ebooks are ok but
they´re not quite the same. I miss being able to go to my
bookshelf to look up things about the nervous system. I
miss being able to pick up a fiction that I've read many
times before and serves the purpose of being a comfort
book, sort of like a blanket in paper form. A papyrus
blanket? Anyway, I have a couple of papyrus blankets that
are heading, hopefully hurtling, towards me and not the
bottom of the sea in addition to my Tomes of Knowledge (4+
knowledge, 2+ wisdom).
I hope they get here soon.
