I know I haven't written about what my novel is about - and I'm not going to until the end of the month, if at all - but I will say that it's set in the near future, and that society works differently in this time.
Although I've read some dystopian fiction and liked it, it's not up there on my list of favourite-genres-must-read-everything-that-comes-out-in-it, mainly because a) it can be kinda depressing, and b) it's a favourite with science fiction writers, which seems to be a favourite genre for first-time writers (*cough*) and so my experience is that there's some really black & white dystopian fiction out there.
So I'm compiling a list of books that I actually do want to read on the topic (and I'm including anything that I have already read). I'm not going to even dare start until the end of Nov (want to avoid contamination, y'know!). Suggestions, contributions and reviews are now open!
- George Orwell: 1984, Animal Farm
- Aldous Huxley: Brave New World, Point Counter Point
- Ray Bradbury: Fahreinheit 451
- Neal Stephenson: Snow Crash
- William Gibson: Neuromancer and the rest of the Sprawl series.
